AIMP es popular, entre otras cosas, por usar pocos recursos durante su ejecución, tener una interfaz de usuario sencilla y fácil de usar, además adoptar uso de carátulas o skins, mediante las cuales es posible cambiar por completo la apariencia de la interfaz gráfica, y posee un potente ecualizador con el que se puede variar la forma del sonido con una considerable calidad. El programa en su versión oficial está en ruso, sin embargo incluye su traducción total al español y a muchos más idiomas. La actualización del programa es semiautomática, mostrando en la barra de tareas una notificación de la nueva versión y permitiendo elegir al usuario si desea descargarla e instalarla o no.

Además de ser un reproductor gratuito de alta calidad, cuenta con un conversor de archivos de audio, el cual se descargaba aparte pero desde las últimas versiones, se descarga en forma conjunta con el Reproductor. Aunque por licenciamiento ya no incluye el codificador de MP3 (Lame), el cual tiene que ser descargado e instalado por cuenta del Usuario.

Actualmente la interfaz soporta transparencias y más formatos de audio. El reproductor está programado en Delphi, un lenguaje basado en Pascal. Las librerías de Audio son de Distribución Libre ya que son parte de Un4seen y la base de datos corre a cargo de SQLite, un gestor de base de datos muy ágil y rápido.
